Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

PBT assessment: overall result

PBT status:
the substance is not PBT / vPvB
Justification:

Hydrogen fluoride is concluded to be not PBT or vPvB based on available data.

Persistence

Hydrogen fluoride is a simple inorganic substance and is therefore not subject to biodegradation, but instead rapidly dissociates at environmentally relevant pH to form hydrogen and fluoride ions, both of which are ubiquitous in the environment. It is therefore concluded that hydrogen fluoride has no potential to persist and is not considered P/vP.

Bioaccumulation

Available data show that fluoride has low bioaccumulation potential, with no accumulation reported for edible tissue. It is therefore concluded that hydrogen fluoride does not meet the criteria to be considered B/vB.

Toxicity

Available long-term toxicity data for freshwater fish, Daphnia and algae exposed to fluoride all report NOEC values >0.01 mg/L. It is therefore concluded that hydrogen fluoride does not meet the criteria to be considered T from an environmental perspective.
