Multiple tests with fish demonstrate a low aquatic toxicity. The lowest 96-h LC50 value of 97 mg/l is from a study with the marine water Fundulus heteroclitus conducted under ASTM standards (Burton and Fisher, 1990). The lowest NOEC value of 83 mg/l is from an early life stage (28-day) test with the fresh water Pimephales promelas (Dill et al, 1985). Invertebrates are assumed to be the most sensitive species. The lowest acute toxicity value in Daphnia magna is a 48-h LC50 of 27 mg/l (Mc Carthy, 1979). Long-term tests with invertebrates were not performed, however a modeled NOEC value for daphnids between 6.2 and 13.3 mg/L was derived. Toxicity to aquatic algae will not be higher than to invertebrates or fish. The lowest threshold level (8-d EC3) was 550 mg/l in Microcystis aeruginosa (Bringman & Kuhn, 1978).

The toxicity of dichloromethane to activated sludge was evaluated by a simple respirometric procedure set up on the basis of OECD Method 209 (Ricco et al., 2004). The exposure duration, however, was only 40 minutes. Several other studies were available; however these studies were either less relevant for toxicity towards STP-organisms or the toxicity values were indecisive (greater than values). The lowest threshold level (40-min EC50) was 2590 mg/l in aerobic domestic sludge.
