Description of key information

The particle size of bismuth metal powder was determined for two samples with different particle size grades:
-200 mesh:
D10 = 19.161 µm
D50 = 44.468 µm
D90 = 84.387 µm
-100 mesh:
D10 = 24.622 µm
D50 = 62.624 µm
D90 = 126.998 µm
The MMAD for bismuth metal powder of -200 mesh was determined as given below, since this is the particle size grade that was considered as relevant for further physico/chemical and toxicological testing:
MMAD and GSD (nonlinear monomodal): 27.66 µm (1.66 µm)

Additional information

The information for the particle size distributions of two bismuth metal samples was made available by the Sponsor.

Dustiness of bismuth metal powder (-200 mesh) was determined according to DIN 55992-1:2006 (Determination of a parameter for the dust formation of pigments and extenders – Part 1: Rotation method). As a deviation, the Heubach dust meter was modified in a way that a seven stage cascade impactor is connected to the system. This involves an additional air fed of 20 L/min via the coarse dust separator needed to supply the cascade impactor with 40 L/min air current as specified in the manufacturer’s specifications.

The Multiple-Path Particle Dosimetry Model (MPPD, v2.0; CIIT, 2006) (calculation report, Grewe 2010) was used to predict fractional deposition behaviour for workers.
