Description of key information

Thermal stability test used as screening test for explosive properties of bismuth metal powder (guideline study results): thermally stable up to 265°C

Additional information

The thermal stability of bismuth metal powder (-200 mesh) was conducted according to OECD guideline 113 under nitrogen. This test can be used as a screening for the determination of explosive properties. The measurements with the test item in a closed glass crucible showed an endothermic effect in the temperature range 265 -280°C (melting temperature approx. 271°C). Bismuth metal is thermally stable up to 265°C.

Justification for classification or non-classification

Experimental results (according to OECD guideline 113) show that bismuth metal powder (-200 mesh) was thermally stable up to 265°C.

Further this substance is void of any chemical structures commonly associated with explosive properties, such as metal peroxides, peroxo-acid-anions, azides, and halogen oxides. In consequence classification for explosive properties is not required.

It is noted that despite long-term industrial use of the substance, it is not classified for explosive properties according to UN transport regulations (in accordance with section 1, Annex XI of Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 (REACH)).
