Short-term aquatic ecotoxicological data are available for all three primary trophic levels. In a study performed according to Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Testing Guideline 203 (Fish, Acute Toxicity Test), fathead minnow (Pimephales promelas) were exposed to five concentrations (separated by a factor of approximately two) of potassium allophonate for 96 hours using a static-renewal test system (ABC Laboratories, 2012b). No mortality was observed during the course of the study in any of the exposure groups; therefore, the 96-hour LC50 is >93.5 mg/L, based on mean measured concentrations.
In a short-term study performed according to OECD Testing Guideline 202 (Daphnia sp. Acute Immobilisation Test), water fleas (Daphnia magna) were exposed to five concentrations of a potassium allophonate solution (separated by a factor of approximately two) under a static-renewal test system (ABC Laboratories, 2012c). The 48-hour EC50 (based on immobility) is >88.4 mg/L, based on mean measured concentrations.
Green algae (Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata) were tested in a study performed according to OECD Testing Guideline 201 (Alga, Growth Inhibition Test) (ABC Laboratories, 2012d). In this test, algae were exposed to five concentrations of a potassium allophonate solution (separated by a spacing factor of approximately two) for 72 hours under a static testing system. During the 72-hour test, rapid hydrolysis of potassium allophonate led to all measured concentrations less than the minimum quantifiable limit (MQL), 0.489 mg/L, at 72 hours. No statistically significant differences in algal growth rate or biomass were observed at any tested concentration; therefore, the 72-hour ErC50 and EyC50 were both >27.4 mg/L, based on mean measured concentrations.
