Description of key information

Three studies are available:
Drop-Weight Impact Sensitivity Tests: The sample did not show any sign of “explosion” when subjected to the highest impact energy of 100 J (Baker, 2015).
Friction Sensitivity Tests: The sample did not show any sign of “explosion” when tested at the highest friction load setting of the apparatus (360 N) (Baker, 2015).
Explosion Severity (Pmax, KSt) Tests: The sample was highly explosible having a KSt value of 255 bar-m/sec (Baker, 2015).

Three studies are available:

The Drop-Weight Impact test indicates that the sample showed no "explosion" when subjected to strong impact stimuli. In the process environment, efforts should be made to try and minimize the exposure of this material to very strong impact energies (>100 J) (Baker, 2015).

 

Friction sensitivity test results indicate that the sample is not sensitive to friction stimuli under the conditions tested. The sample did not show any sign of "explosion" when tested at the highest friction load setting of the apparatus (360 N). The UN Manual of Tests and Criteria for Transportation of Dangerous Goods considers this sample to be safe for transport since the limiting loads are greater than 80 N (Baker, 2015).

 

The sample was highly explosible having a KSt value of 255 bar-m/sec, thus, classifying it as an St2 class dust. Mitigation strategies will be required when handling this powder to minimize the risk of an explosion (Baker, 2015).

Justification for classification or non-classification

The test substance does not show any sign of "explosion" when subjected to the highest impact energy of 100 J and tested at the highest friction load setting of the apparatus (360 N).

Therefore in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 section 2.1.2.2 the substance shall not be classified as explosive.
