Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The water solubility of Alcohols, C12-15, branched and linear is <1.3 mg/L at 20°C and pH 7.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The solubility of <1.3 mg/L at 20°C and pH 7 was determined for Alcohols, C12 -15, branched and linear in accordance with OECD 105. The result is considered to be reliable.

The key study is supported bt water solubility values of 0.8 mg/l at 20°C and 0.64 mg/l at 25°C.

Whilst water solubility for a multi-constituent or UVCB substance is not meaningful scientifically for the purpose of assessment of exposure or risk, a limit value has been determined for a commercial sample. This is useful for reference. Exposure and risk are assessed on the basis of water solubility of the individual constituents. Dodecan-1-ol, tetradecan-1-ol and pentadecan-1-ol have water solubility values of 1 mg/L at 23°C, 0.35 mg/l at 25°C and 0.1 mg/l at 20°C respectively.

Discussion of trends in the Category of C6-24 linear and essentially-linear aliphatic alcohols:

As chain length increases, water solubility decreases, because the free energy required for a molecule to dissolve becomes less favourable for larger molecules.
