A solid sample of the cobalt complex (1.3 mg) is added to 5.0 mL of n-octanol (99%) at 20°C. The sample is agitated by shaking. The concentration of the substance in the octanol solution is determined by UV-vis spectroscopic method.

The sample was agitated by shaking in an attempt to effect dissolution; however, no dissolution was observed. The sample dissolution experiment was continued for three days with no observed change.

It was not feasible to conduct the octanol dissolution experiment to test for lower levels of solubility due to experimental constraints.

Additionally, the cobalt analyte in n-octanol was not detectable by UV-vis spectroscopic methods. The UV-vis spectroscopic method could detect up to 0.007 g/L in aqueous solution, and it is assumed the extinction coefficient would be similar to n-octanol and water for the analyte. Therefore, this study can only conclude that the solubility of the cobalt complex in n-octanol is less than 0.007 g/L.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
The solubility of the test item in n-octanol is less than 7 mg/L (LOD of the UV-vis spectroscopic method) at 20°C. In addition, visually no dissolution of this coloured solid is observed.
