Study design

Oxygen conditions:
aerobic
Inoculum or test system:
activated sludge, domestic, non-adapted
Details on inoculum:
Secondary effluent, microorganisms from a domestic waste water treatment plant.
The secondary effluent used for this study was allowed to settle approximately for an hour, then the decanted effluent was aerated until use (not later than an hour).
Duration of test (contact time):
28 d
Initial test substance concentration
Initial conc.:
7.6 mg/L
Parameter followed for biodegradation estimation
Parameter followed for biodegradation estimation:
O2 consumption
Remarks:
as BOD/COD ratio
Reference substance
Reference substance:
other: sodium benzoate

Results and discussion

% Degradation
Key result
Parameter:
% degradation (O2 consumption)
Value:
1.7
Sampling time:
28 d
Details on results:
The test item was degraded at 1.7% (mean) within 28 days based on COD.

BOD5 / COD results

Results with reference substance:
The biodegradation percentage of the reference substance was 85.8% (mean) after 28 days of incubation, based on ThOD, confirming the suitability of the used inoculum.

Any other information on results incl. tables

In the toxicity control containing both the test item and the reference item, a mean of 40.7 % biodegradation was noted after 28 days of incubation. Therefore, the test item is considered as non-inhibitory to secondary effluent microorganisms.

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Interpretation of results:
not readily biodegradable
Conclusions:
Based on the low degradation (1.7%) observed over 28 days, the test item is considered not readily biodegradable.
