Additional information

The study performed by Dantest (1983) was determined to be the key study based on the fact that it is a guideline study carried out at an appropriate temperature for evaluating environmental fate and behaviour of the substance. Although the 4-chloro-2 -methylphenol is handled in the molten phase, it is considered that exposure to the molten phase is reduced by the inherent properties the substance. The melting point of 46 - 50°C means that any spillage/exposure outside standard plant operating conditions will result in a solid.

The study submitted by BASF (1994) quotes the vapour pressure 70°C, no guideline was cited and it was felt that although vapour pressure at this temperature is required for production operating conditions, the value is not appropriate for risk assessment purposes.

A third value of 3.2 Pa at 25°C (Seiber et al.) was included in the Danish review document, however this was considered less reliable by the review panel as it states the result was found in a ‘laboratory study'. The study was not included in this document.
