The sustance 2 -propoxyethanol was evaluated at selected concentrations in a mixture containing buffer, nutrients, growth substrate and microorganisms., by incubation in an 8-ounce, narrow-neck, round bottle for 16 hours on a platform shaker at ambient temperature. Seeded control bottles are used to measure growth or turbidity generated during the 16 hours without the test material. The bottles were stoppered with cotton plugs during shaking to avoid contamination. The IC10 was found to be >1000 mg/L, the maximum dose tested. 2 -propoxyethanol is considered an excellent surrogate for isopropoxyethanol because of the very similar structure. In fact the ECOSAR QSAR model predicts that ethoxypropanol and isopropoxyethanol will have absolutely identical toxicity to fish, invertebrates and algae.
