Description of key information

Two short-term toxicity studies on fish with an acceptable reliability were selected, i.e. one on freshwater fish and one on marine water fish. The lowest LC50 derived was 34 mg/L.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Fresh water fish

Fresh water fish
Effect concentration:
40 mg/L

Marine water fish

Marine water fish
Effect concentration:
34 mg/L

Additional information

The toxicity of 1,1,2 -trichloroethane was studied on the freshwater fish Lepomis macrochirus in a static test performed according to the EPA guideline, 1975 (Buccafuso et al., 1981). The test substance was soluble at test concentrations and environmental conditions. A control was made. Test results were reported as nominal concentrations. The LC50 (24 and 96 hrs) on Lepomis macrochirus was determined to be 40 mg test substance/L.

The toxicity of 1,1,2 -trichloroethane was tested on the marine fish Pleuronectes platessa according to an internal standardized protocol of TNO (Adema and Vink, 1981). The test was performed in semi-static conditions, with monitoring of concentrations. Also a negative control was included. The LC50 of Pleuronectes platessa was determined to be 34 mg/L after 48h exposure.
