The flame of the gas burner did ignite the test material pile. The test material melted, fizzed, burned with an orange flame and turned into a brown residue. Pink smoke was observed. After removal of the ignition source, the flame extinguished after 1 second and no propagation of combustion was observed.

The flammability of the test material was assessed according to UN Test N.1 in accordance with the principles of GLP.
The preliminary screening test was performed for the determination of the flammability of the test material. The study was assigned a reliability score of 1 in accordance with the principles for assessing data quality as outlined by Klimisch et al. (1997).
No propagation of combustion of the test material along 200 mm length of the pile within 2 minutes was observed. According to the guidelines, performance of the burning rate test is not required. Based on the results obtained, the test material is considered ‘not flammable’.
Flammability (Solids): Supporting Information
The flammability of the read across substance, sodium periodate, was investigated in accordance with the standardised guideline EU Method A.10 under GLP conditions. The study was assigned a reliability score of 1 in accordance with the principles for assessing data quality as outlined by Klimisch et al (1997), however, since the data is available on a read across substance an overall reliability score of 2 is considered appropriate. Sodium periodate is considered to be a suitable substance for read across since it is the sodium salt of periodic acid.

Flammability (Pyrophoricity and Contact with Water)
In accordance with Section 1 of Annex XI of the Regulation (EC) 1907/2006 (REACH), it is considered justified to omit the flammability (contact with water) study and the pyrophoric properties of solids and liquids study (both required in Section 7.10 of Annex VII) as there is no evidence of the test material either spontaneously igniting in air at room temperature or exhibiting flammable properties in contact with water.
Justification for classification or non-classification
In accordance with the criteria for classification as defined in Annex I, Regulation (EC) 1272/2008, the test material does not require classification for flammability.
