Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
data from handbook or collection of data
Justification for type of information:
2-ethylhexanol and pentane-2,4-dione are two main hydrolysis prodcuts of the target substance. Properties of the the two substance are used for read-across.
Guideline:
other: not specified.
GLP compliance:
not specified
Test organisms (species):
Scenedesmus quadricauda
Test type:
static
Water media type:
freshwater
Total exposure duration:
72 h
Key result
Duration:
72 h
Dose descriptor:
NOEC
Effect conc.:
>= 1.3 - <= 3.2 mg/L
Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Endpoint:
toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
comparable to guideline study
Justification for type of information:
2-ethylhexanol and pentane-2,4-dione are two main hydrolysis prodcuts of the target substance. Properties of the the two substance are used for read-across.
Qualifier:
equivalent or similar to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 201 (Alga, Growth Inhibition Test)
GLP compliance:
not specified
Test organisms (species):
other: Algae: green algae, mainly Scenedesmus sp
Duration:
24 h
Dose descriptor:
EC10
Effect conc.:
ca. 100 mg/L
Nominal / measured:
nominal
Basis for effect:
other: inhibition of assimilation
Key result
Duration:
24 h
Dose descriptor:
EC50
Effect conc.:
> 300 mg/L
Nominal / measured:
nominal
Basis for effect:
other: inhibition of assimilation
Validity criteria fulfilled:
yes
Conclusions:
After an exposure time of 24 hours the EC10 and EC50 values were determined to be 100 mg/l and > 300 mg/l, respectively. The EC10 value from this test can be regarded as long-term effect value for algae.

Description of key information

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
16.6 mg/L

Additional information

No studies were conducted on the target substance, Reaction product of Titanium tetrakis(2-ethylhexan-1-olato) and pentane-2,4-dione. As the target substance hydrolyses rapidly (half-life < 30 minutes) the intrinsic properties are related to hydrolysis products of the target substance.

On the basis that if entering the environmental, this substance will quickly dissociate to form the inorganic (poorly soluble) titanium dioxide and two well-evaluated organic substances – 2-ethylhexanol and pentane-2,4-dione. .

The titanium dioxide is not considered further in this report as aquatic toxicity assessments do not apply.

For pentane-2,4-dione, after an exposure time of 24 hours the EC10 and EC50 values were determined to be 100 mg/l and > 300 mg/l, respectively.

For 2-ethylhexanol, a review article indicated NOEC between 1.3-3.2 mg/l (Staples 2001). The reported 72h EC50 in Scenedesmus subspicatus was 16.6 mg/l based on growth rate.(ECHA,https://echa.europa.eu/information-on-chemicals).

Based on the findings, the lowest level for 2-ethylhexanol was therefore used for CSA.
