Description of key information

Toxicity to birds was investigated with the soluble lanthanum trichloride salt.
LD0 (28 d) ≥ 100 mg/kg diet as lanthanum trichloride, equvalent to ≥ 56.6 mg La/kg diet.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

Birds

No data are available for lanthanum oxide, but a study was performed for the soluble lanthanum salt lanthanum trichloride. One day old Japanese quails were allotted to a basis diet with 50 or 100 mg/kg of lanthanum chloride for four weeks. Feed and water was supplied ad libitum. The hatchlings were observed for mortality and changes in body weight and tibia mineralization. The average percentage of mortality in the treatment and control groups during the whole period was 1.3% resulting in a LD0 ≥ 100 mg/kg diet equivalent to 56.6 mg La/kg diet. Furthermore the author stated that 100 mg/kg diet was the optimum concentration of lanthanum salts for increasing growth performance and for improving bone mineralization. As this study was performed with soluble Lanthanum salt it can be considered to represent a worst case assumption for Lanthanum oxide, as it is likely that the bioavailability of lanthanum oxide to birds will be lower due to its low water solubility.
