Description of key information

Aluminum zirconium chloride hydroxide is an inorganic substance which will rapidly dissociate into aluminum, zirconium, chloride and hydroxide ions upon dissolution in the environment. However, zirconium ions will not remain as such in solution, and the environmental toxicity (if any) will not be driven by zirconium. Therefore, full read-across to other aluminum substances considering a typical aluminum content of ca. 19.4% is justified. The lowest reliable NOEC/EC10 value of 0.013 mg/L dissolved aluminum derived in a semistatic 60-d test with Salvelinus fontinalis is recalculated and results in a NOEC of 0.067 mg/L aluminum zirconium chloride hydroxide.

Thus, regarding the environmental fate and toxicity of Aluminum zirconium chloride hydroxide, it can be assumed that environmental fate and toxicity (if any) will not be driven by zirconium. Therefore, full read-across to other aluminum substances considering a typical aluminum content of ca. 19.4% is justified (see below).

Two long-term studies with aluminum sulphate are available. One study was a 60 days Early-life-stage test withSalvelinus fontinaliswhich gave a NOEC of 13 µg/l (dissolved Al) based on incomplete hatching. It was a semi-static test at a pH of 6.5 -6.6. The other study was a subchronic test as only mortality was observed withSalmo truttain natural water. The LC50 at 28 days was 19 µg/l and at 42 days 15 µg/l. The pH in this study was 5.8 -5.9.
