Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Short-term toxicity to fish: LC50 (96 h, Oncorhynchus mykiss) > 100 mg/l (nominal)

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates: EC50 (48 h, Daphnia magna) > 100 mg/l (nominal)

Toxicity to aquatic algae: ErC50 and EyC50 (72 h, Desmodesmus subspicatus) > 100 mg/l (nominal)

Toxicity to microorganisms: EC50 (3 h) > 1000 mg/l (nominal)

Additional information

Two experimental studies on Disperse Yellow 231 were available: an acute toxicity study in fish (comparable to OECD guideline 203) and an activated sludge respiration inhibition test (comparable to OECD guideline 209).

Studies on Similar Substance 01 were used to evaluate the toxicity to Daphnia magna according to the OECD guideline 202 and the toxicity to Desmodesmus subspicatus according to the OECD guideline 201.

Disperse Yellow 231 and Similar Substance 01 have a solubility in water << 1 mg/l and a logPow > 4. In test media, both substance were slightly soluble, thus test results were expresssed as nominal concentrations (loading rate).

Justification for classification or non-classification:

According to the CLP Regulation (EC 1272/2008), substances can be classified for hazardous to the aquatic environment when the following criteria are met:

A) acute (short-term) aquatic hazard:

Category Acute 1: 96 hr LC50 (fish) and/or 48 hr EC50 (crustacea) and/or 72 or 96 hr ErC50 (algae/other aquatic plants) ≤ 1 mg/l.

B) long-term aquatic hazard (iii) Substances for which adequate chronic toxicity data are not available and the substance is not rapidly degradable and/or the experimentally determined BCF ≥ 500 (or, if absent, the log KOW ≥ 4):

Category Chronic 1: 96 h LC50 (fish) and/or 48 h EC50 (invertebrates) and/or 72 or 96 h ErC50 (algae/other aquatic plants) ≤ 1 mg/l;

Category Chronic 2: 96 h LC50 (fish) and/or 48 h EC50 (invertebrates) and/or 72 or 96 h ErC50 (algae/other aquatic plants) > 1 to ≤ 10 mg/l;

Category Chronic 3: 96 h LC50 (fish) and/or 48 h EC50 (invertebrates) and/or 72 or 96 h ErC50 (algae/other aquatic plants) > 10 to ≤ 100 mg/l.

The test item is not readily biodegradable, logPow is 5.87 and available acute toxicity tests to fish, invertebrates and aquatic algae fixed effect levels that do not meet the criteria related to the hazard categories for acute and chronic aquatic toxicity. Therefore, the substance is not classified for aquatic toxicity.
