Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Log Kow of PFBSK+ was measured to be -1.8 at an average temperature of 23°C

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

The n-Octanol/Water Partition Coefficient (log Kow) of PFBSK+ was determined according to EU method A.8 (Partition Coefficient, Shake Flask Method). Duplicate test vessels containing PFBSK+ at three (49:1, 24:1 and 11.5:1) of n-octanol to water ratios were prepared. The six samples were mixed, and centrifuged at 10000 rpm for 20 minutes. After centrifugation, the water phases and octanol phases were separated, and each phase was combusted, respectively. The combustion gas (containing Fluorine) was absorbed with diluted sodium hydroxide solution. Subsequently the fluorine concentrations in the octanol and water phase were measured using a Fluoride ion selective electrode. pH values were also measured and ranged from 5.9 – 6.3. The PFBS concentrations in each of the octanol and water phases were calculated from the measured fluorine concentration. The Kow was determined by the ratio of measured PFBSK+ concentration in the octanol and water phase. Measured Kow ranged from 1.014E-02 to 2.367E-02, overall average Kow was 1.72E-02 (RSD% = 29%). The overall average log Kow was -1.8.

This is a guideline study conducted under GLP compliance. However, it lacks detailed documentation on the analytical information. Therefore, it is considered reliable with restrictions, and a key study.
