- One water sampled was removed from both replicate solutions of each treatment and control at 0 and 48 hours for analysis of methane sulfonic acid concentrations. Each exposure solution was collected from the approximate midpoint of the test vessel with a volumetric pipet.

- The dilution water used during this study was from the same source as the water used in the daphnid cultures and had a total hardness and alkalinity as CaCo3 of 170 mg/L and 120 mg/L, respectively, a pH of 8.3 and a specific conductivity of 470 µmhos/cm. Representative samples of the dilution water source were analysed periodically for the presence of pesticides, PCBs and toxic metals. None of these compounds have detected as concentrations that are considered toxic in any of the water samples analyzed, in agreement with ASTM (1993) standard practice. In addition, representative samples of the dilution water source were analyzed monthly for total organic carbon (TOC) concentration. The TOC concenrations of the dilution water sources was 0.57 mg/L for the month of October 1997. Several species of daphnids are maintained in water from the same source as the dilution water used in the present study and have successfully survived and reproduced over several generations. The excellent performance of the cultured daphnids, in combination with the previously mentioned analyses, confirmed the acceptability of this dilution water for bioassays.

The toxicity of methane sulfonic acid was tested against Daphnia magna in a GLP compliant OECD 202 guideline study. The experiment was performed in 1 -L glass beakers filled with 500 mL test solution. Tested nominal concentrations of methane sulfonic acid were 0 ; 120 ; 210 ; 330 ; 570 ; 890 mg/L (active substance). Each concentration was tested in duplicate. Ten daphnids (less than 24 hours old) were introduced in each of the two beakers. Exposure lasted 48 hours under static conditions.
