Additional information

The toxicity of TMHP to algae was tested in an OECD 201 guideline study in accordance with GLP.

The test samples have shown to be stable when prepared in distilled water and there is no evidence that the test material adsorbs to glass. The test samples have, however, been shown unstable when prepared in algal culture media, possible due to formation of a complex with one of the dissolved salts (probably Na2EDTA.2H2O). At t = 0, the measured concentrations were 99 - 103% of nominal. At t = 72h, the measured concentrations were below the LOD (0.0015 mg/L) with the exception of the measured concentration of the sample with the highest nominal concentration: 0.022 mg/L, which can be regarded as negligible.

The authors reported nominal ErC50 and NOErC values for the period 24 -48h of 0.32 and 0.125 mg/L, respectively. It was not reported why this specific period was chosen, as exponential growth was observed during the whole test period. The reviewer accounted for the decline by calculating arithmetic mean measured ErC50 and NOErC values of 0.32 and 0.063 mg/L, respectively, which were furthermore based on growth inhibition during the whole test period (0 -72h). For measured concentrations <LOD at t=72h, a value of LOD/2 (0.00075 mg/L) was taken. Since no analytical measurements were done at t = 24h and t =48h, no TWA mean measured ErC50 and NOErC value could be calculated and a linear decline of test concentrations had to be assumed. Therefore the EC50 value and NOEC value may still be overestimated and the study was assigned a reliability 2.
