Abstract: Amestest using Salmonella strains TA-1535, TA-537, TA-1538, TA-98, TA-100; and gene conversion and mitotic crossing over using Saccharomyces-cerevisiae strain 6117. TheAmestest and the S-cerevisiae test were performed both in the absence and in the presence of microsomes. None of the compounds exerted any DNA damaging, mutagenic, or recombinogenic activity in the three assays. The authors conclude that microbial assays do not detect any genotoxicity in this class of chemicals. Tests of toxicity revealed that the presence of different chemical groups in the benzotrifluoride molecule strongly affects its antimicrobial activity. The most active benzotrifluoride was 4-chlor-3,5-dinitro-benzotrifluoride (393759), previously demonstrated to be toxic for different species of fungi. The antimicrobial activity revealed by the microbial assays described may also be relevant to potential environmental pollution of a tested chemical in order to predict damage to natural microbial communities in water and soil. |
