Study Guidelines
The present study was conducted according to:
CIPAC, 1995: The Collaborative International Pesticides Analytical Council Limited, CIPAC MT Capillary Stoppered Pyknometer Method. In: CIPAC Handbook, Vol. F, “Physico-chemical Methods for Technical and Formulated Pesticides”, 1995.OECD, 2012: The Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) Guidelines for the Testing of Chemicals, OECD 109, Density of Liquids and Solids, adopted by the Council on October 02, 2012.
U.S. EPA, 2002: The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Product Properties Test Guidelines, OCSPP 830.7300, “Density/Relative Density/Bulk Density” (EPA 712-C-02-035), June 2002.
Methodology ( Capillary Stoppered Pyknometer Method)
Calibration of Pyknometer
The clean and dry pyknometer was immersed up to the neck in the constant temperature bath at 20 ± 0.5 °C for 20 minutes to establish the surface conditions. Then the pyknometer was weighed (x, g).
After weighing, the pyknometer was filled with distilled water and the pyknometer immersed up to the neck in the constant temperature bath at 20 ± 0.5 °C for 20 minutes. The stopper was inserted on the neck of the pyknometer, taking care to avoid any trapping of air bubbles and gently pushed home with a slight twist. The water on the neck and the sides of the pyknometer was wiped with a piece of
tissue paper. Finally, the top of the stopper was wiped ensuring that water was not withdrawn from the capillary. Then the pyknometer was re-weighed (y, g). The water equivalence (WE) was calculated as (y – x) g and the capacity of the pyknometer (V20) was calculated as 1.0018 (y – x) mL.Procedure for Liquids
After carrying out the calibration of pyknometer as mentioned above, the pyknometer and stopper was cleaned and dried. The whole process as mentioned under the was repeated with the test item being examined instead of distilled water, ensuring that no air bubbles were trapped while filling the test item. The weight of the pyknometer filled with the test item was recorded (y', g). The experiment was conducted in three replicates and mean specific gravity and density along with standard deviation was reported.RESULTS
Specific Gravity
The true specific gravity with buoyancy correction of Finester 2009 was 1.2656, 1.2648, and 1.2672, at 20 ± 0.5 °C, for replication 1, 2, and 3, respectively.
The mean true specific gravity with buoyancy correction of Finester 2009 was 1.2659 ± 0.0012, at 20 ±
0.5 °C.
The mean density of Finester 2009 was 1.2629 ± 0.0012 g/mL, at 20 ± 0.5 °C.
