Test procedure:
burning rate test: preliminary screening test
Burning time:
ca. 5 s
Remarks on result:
substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period

Preliminary Test

The test item melted and the molten test item started to burn locally after applying the flame for about 30 s. After approx. 5 s burning time the local burning extinguished without further propagation.

Main Test

In the preliminary test the test item melted and showed only a local burning for approx. 5 s without propagation. Thus, the performance of the main test was not necessary.

Interpretation of results:
not classified based on GHS criteria
Conclusions:
2-Naphthol is not to be classified as flammable acc. to GHS-criteria.
Executive summary:

The test item 2 -Naphthol melted and showed only a local burning for approx. 5 s without propagation.

The test item is classified as follows:

CLP Regulation EC 1272/2008: Annex 1: 2.7): The test item does not have to be classified as flammable solid according to CLP Regulation EC 1272/2008 Annex 1: 2.7.

Description of key information

A study was performed to determine the flammability of the test substance 2-naphthol.  The study was conducted according to the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria: Test N.1 (Test method for readily combustible solids).  The test substance 2-naphthol melted and only showed burning for approx. 5 s without propagation.  It was concluded that the test item 2-naphthol does not meeting the criteria for classification as a flammable solid according to the CLP Regulation EC 1272/2008 Annex I: 2.7.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

Justification for classification or non-classification

The test item 2-naphthol melted and showed only a local burning for appox. 5 s without propagation.  Therefore, the substance does not meet the criteria for classification according to the CLP regulation EC 1272/2008 Annex I: 2.7.
