Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria

Description of key information

Multiple valid studies in freshwater alga have available with identical findings. Consistently, alkylsulfonates show no toxicity to freshwater alga tested at concentrations up to 1000 mg/L loading rate. The value used to estimate the PNEC for freshwater algae is a NOEC of 1000 mg/L.

Additional information

Representative alkarylsulfonate salts have been tested in two seperate testing programs by the American Chemistry Council. In addition, the registrant has proprietary data for an additional substance. While all studies are equally valid, the study on CMA 604 is selected as the Key Study to fulfill the endpoint requirement as the substance most chemically similar to the substance being registered based on primary alkyl range used for manufacture and metal salt (calcium) used for neutralization. In this study, the substance was tested in a WAF prepared with concentrations up to 1000 mg/L loading rate. No toxicity to aquatic algae was observed in any study at any loading rate tested. The NOEC for aquatic algae based on all available data is 1000 mg/L WAF.

The toxicity of the substance has not been assessed using a marine invertebrate species. However, based on the lack of toxicity to any species tested, it is likely the NOEC is similar to that for freshwater species. Therefore the value of 1000 mg/L is used to calculate the PNEC for marine invertebrates.
