Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The potential for explosivity was made by examining the substance for key structural components.  The substance does not have any chemical groups associated with explosive properties.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Explosiveness:
non explosive

Additional information

An assessment of the potential for explosive properties of Sulphonic Acid Branched Alkylate was made.

Examination of the structural formula indicates:

• There are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties.

• The oxygen is not bound in energetic functional groups – it is bound in -O-Sgroups which do not possess explosive behaviour. The oxygen balance is -236 – below the criteria for consideration (-200).

• Thermal stability analysis has been conducted on the sample using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Examination of the spectra up to 500°C shows no major or significant exothermic events (i.e. there are no events with a magnitude of > 500 J/g).

Based on this combination of factors, it is beyond reasonable doubt that the material will not exhibit explosive properties. There are no elements of the screening procedure which begin to suggest that explosive properties may be exhibited by the substance.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The potential for explosivity was made by examining the substance for key structural components. The substance does not have any chemical groups associated with explosive properties and therefore does not need to be classified.
