Test guideline
Qualifier:
according to guideline
Guideline:
OECD Guideline 103 (Boiling Point)
Deviations:
yes
Remarks:
see conclusion
Principles of method if other than guideline:
The methods given in OECD guideline 103 were not suitable because a chemical reaction already occurred below the boiling point.
Therefore, the test was conducted using differential thermo analysis.

Abbreviated description of the measurement principles
Two sample pans of lens size (one with test substance and one with reference substance or
empty) were heated linear at the same time. In this test an empty pan was used as reference. A
temperature probe was positioned below the pans.
Occurring thermal reactions (exothermic and endothermic) were captured as temperature
difference and plotted in a thermograph.
An apparatus by the firm Heraeus, type DTA 500 S, was used as analyzer.
GLP compliance:
yes (incl. QA statement)

Applicant's summary and conclusion

Conclusions:
The objective of the test was to determine the boiling point of the test substance methyl yellow at
normal pressure according to OECD guideline 103.
The boiling point could not be determined with the methods listed in the guideline because chemical
reactions already occurred at temperatures below the boiling point.
Therefore, measurements were conducted using a Differential Thermo Analyzer (DTA).
An exothermal reaction was observed at approximately 195° C. The temperature was increased at the
test substance disintegrated at 259° C.
It was not possible to determine the boiling point of the test substance at normal pressure.
