Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.
The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Short-term toxicity to aquatic invertebrates

Description of key information
Short term toxicity to invertebrates: 48-h EC50 >500 mg/l and NOEC of >=500 mg/l (nominal) (limit test) (EU Method C.2 (Acute Toxicity for Daphnia), read-across from an analogous/structurally related substance, triethoxy(methyl)silane (CAS 2031-67-6). The EC50 is equivalent to >264 mg/l when expressed in terms of the silanol hydrolysis product.
Key value for chemical safety assessment
Additional information
In a study conducted with the test substance, a 48-h EC50 value of >100 mg/l and NOEC of <10 mg/l for the effects of the test substance on mobility of Daphnia magna was determined. This study was not supported by analysis and undissolved material was observed in the unfiltered stock. It is possible that physical effects and/or pH effects could have contributed to the effects observed in the test.
The available short-term invertebrate toxicity data available for potassium methylsilanetriolate (CAS 31795-24-1) is subject to uncertainty, therefore good quality data for an appropriate structural analogue, triethoxy(methyl)silane (CAS 2031-67-6), have been read across. Both substances share the silanol product, methylsilanetriol. The other hydrolysis product of triethoxy(methyl)silane is ethanol.
A 48-h EC50 value of >500 mg/l and NOEC of >=500 mg/l (nominal) (limit test) have been determined for the effects of triethoxy(methyl)silane (CAS 2031-67-6) on mobility of Daphnia magna. In view of the test media preparation method/exposure regime it is likely that the test organisms were exposed primarily to the hydrolysis products of the tested substance.
The results may be expressed in terms of concentration of the hydrolysis product, methylsilanetriol, by applying a molecular weight correction: (MW of silanol = 94.14 / MW of parent = 178.31) * (CONCENTRATION OF PARENT = >500) = >264 mg/l as methylsilanetriol.
