Justification:

2,2,4 (or 2,4,4)-trimethylhexane-1,6-diamine might fulfil the criterion for persistence, but not the criteria for bioaccumulation and toxicity detailed in Annex XIII. Since only one criterion of the PBT and vPvB criteria is fulfilled, the substance can not be considered a PBT or vPvB.

Screening tests on biodegradation in water showed that the substance is neither readily nor inherently degradable.

Based on the information available at the moment, the substance has to be classified as persistent and very persistent respectively.

The log Kow of 2,2,4 (or 2,4,4)-trimethylhexane-1,6-diamine was determined experimentally according to OECD guideline No. 117. The value of -0.3 at 25 °C and pH 7.5 is well below the criterion of 4.5.

The criteria for toxicity according to Annex XIII are chronic toxicity data for the aquatic environment. If these values are below 0.01 mg/l the substance can be regarded as potentially toxic. The lowest valid chronic test result derived from aquatic toxicity testing with fish, invertebrates and algae are as follows:

Daphnia magna (21d): NOEC = 1.02 mg/L

Since the lowest chronic test data are well above 0.01 mg/l, the criterion for toxicity is not fulfilled.

Furthermore the substance is not classified as T, R48, or Xn, R48 according to Directive 67/548/EEC and is not carcinogenic, mutagenic or toxic for reproduction.
