The test substance lowers the surface tension of pure water significantly.

At 20°C a fresh saturated solution (2.4 g/1) shows a surface tension of 47.8 mN/m which means a decrease of 25.0 mN/m.

The value of the surface tension increases with time due to evaporation of the test substance from the aqueous solution.

At 20°C a solution containing 1.4 g/1 shows an initial surface tension of 63.9 mNim which means a decrease of 8.9 mN/m. The latter value stabilises to 66.2 mN/m after approximately 2.5 hours.
