An acute fish using Cyprinus carpio study is available following OECD guideline 203 (Enste-Diefenbach 2003). Five test concentrations were used and these were analysed using ICP-OES. As recoveries were more than 80% of nominal, nominal values were used for the calculation of results. In all test concentrations, a brown sediment was observed at the bottom of the test vessel and in one test concentration brown-coloured deposits were seen on the surface of the fish. The pH values were outside recommended values in some of the test vessels (pH 2.1 – 7.8). Due to the low pH of the test solutions no fish were added to the three highest test concentrations (260, 460 and 800 mg L-1) and low pH is thought to have contributed to the toxicity observed in the 150 mg L-1 test concentration. The 96-hour LC50 was determined to be 116 mg test item L-1.

For palladium a single, worst case PNEC value has been derived for each environmental compartment, to cover all palladium substances. The PNEC has been derived based on the most toxic palladium substance, diamminedichloropalladium. Therefore, although toxicity results for diamminedicloropalladium are likely to overestimate the toxicity of palladium substances that do not contain a chloro ligand, this data is included in the dossiers for all palladium substance as it was taken into account in PNEC derivation.
