Description of key information

Additional information

Appearance:

The test compound C. I acid red 14 (CAS no 3567 -69 -9) was observed for physical appearance and its type (SSS, 2016). On the basis of physical observation, the test compound C. I. acid red 14 is found to organic red brown crystalline solid.

Melting Point:

The melting point determination of Test item Disodium 4-hydroxy-3-[(4-sulphonatonaphthyl)azo] naphthalene sulphonate (CAS No. 3567-69-9)was done as per the test guideline OECD 102 (SSS, 2016). The method followed was according to Capillary/metal block. The test item decomposes with colour change from red brown crystalline powder to black at 275 °C, but does not melt. Thus, the mean decomposition temperature was found to be 275 °C at 968.6 hPa.

Boiling Point:

The boiling point of the test substance Carmoisine (Common name: Ext D & C Red No. 10) is predicted by EPI suite to be 907.49 deg C by Adapted Stein and Brown Method.

Density:

The density of test item Disodium 4-hydroxy-3-[(4-sulphonatonaphthyl)azo] naphthalene sulphonate (CAS No. 3567-69-9) was determined following OECD Guideline 109 and according to themethod recommended in the International Pharmacopoeia, fourth Edition, 2014 using glass pyknometer by SSS, 2016.The mean pour density and tapped density of the test item Disodium 4-hydroxy-3-[(4-sulphonatonaphthyl) azo] naphthalene sulphonate(CAS No. 3567-69-9) was found to be 0.5032 g/cm3and 0.6290 g/cm3at 31.3oC and  967.4 hPa.

Particle size Distribution:

The particle size distribution of Disodium 4-hydroxy-3-[(4-sulphonatonaphthyl)azo]naphthalene sulphonate(CAS No. 3567 -69-9) was found to be in the range of 150 micron to 25 micron (SSS, 2016).

Vapour pressure:

The vapour pressure of the test compound Carmoisine as predicted by EPI suite (Modified Grain method) is estimated to be 1.4E-022 Pa.

Partition Coefficient:

The partition coefficient (Log Kow/Pow) as predicted by EPI suite for the test material Carmoisine is estimated to be -0.0011.

Water Solubility:

The test material CI Acid Red 14 is soluble in water.

Surface tension:

In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, this testing needs to be carried out only if surface activity is a desired property of the chemical. The chemical sodium Disodium 4-hydroxy-3-[(4-sulphonatonaphthyl)azo]naphthalene sulphonate is used mostly as a food dye. For this uses, surface activity is not a desired property and hence this end point was considered for waiver.

Flash Point:

The flash point determination of Disodium 4-hydroxy-3-[(4-sulphonatonaphthyl)azo] naphthalene sulphonate (CAS No. 3567-69-9) was done following closed cup method using Pensky-Martens flash point apparatus (SSS, 2016). The test was conducted in replicates and mean flash point was found to be greater than 225 °C at 969.3 hPa.

Autoflammability:

Disodium 4-hydroxy-3-[(4-sulphonatonaphthyl)azo]naphthalene sulphonate; disodium 4-hydroxy-3-[(4-sulfonato-1-naphthyl)diazenyl]naphthalene-1-sulfonate   did not catch fire on being exposed to air at room temperature of 27°Cpressure of 966 hPa. This indicates that Disodium 4-hydroxy-3-[(4-sulphonatonaphthyl)azo]naphthalene sulphonate; disodium 4-hydroxy-3-[(4-sulfonato-1-naphthyl)diazenyl]naphthalene-1-sulfonate   is not auto-flammable.

Flammability:

From the experimental values of flammability, test chemical ignited when the flame of bunsen burner having temperature of 950°C was brought in contact with it. Thus it can be concluded that test chemical is flammable only at high temperature of about 950°C. However since such high temperatures are not found under normal circumstances of transportation and use, test chemical was considered non-flammable for chemical safety assessment.

Explosiveness:

In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the study is scientifically unjustified since there are no chemical groups associated with explosive properties present in the molecule of the chemical Disodium 4-hydroxy-3-[(4-sulphonatonaphthyl)azo]naphthalene sulphonate. Also, there are no known evidence that the chemical is explosive. Thus, this end point was considered for waiver and the chemical is considered "Not Explosive" for the purpose of chemical safety assessment.

Oxidising properties:

In accordance with column 2 of Annex VII of the REACH regulation, the substance Disodium 4-hydroxy-3-[(4-sulphonatonaphthyl)azo] naphthalene sulphonate is incapable of reacting exothermically with combustible materials,on the basis of the chemical structure. It is an organic substance containing oxygen atoms but no halogen atoms and these elements are not chemically bonded to nitrogen or oxygen. THus, the chemical is unlikely to exhibit oxidising properties and has been considered as "Non Oxidising" for the purpose of chemical safety assessment
