According to Annex VIII of Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 the generation of sediment data is not required. However, the physico-chemical properties Fatty acids, C8 -10, octyl esters (CAS 91031-98-0) indicate a possible distribution to the sediment. Experimental data evaluating the toxicity of the substance to sediment organisms are not available. Therefore, in accordance to Regulation (EC) No. 1907/2006 Annex XI, 1.5 Grouping of substances, read-across to the structurally similar substance Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsatd., iso-Bu esters (CAS 84988-79-4) was conducted. The target substance fatty acids, C8 -10, octyl esters is an UVCB substance comprising linear C8-10 fatty acids esterified with octanol. The source substance Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsatd., iso-Bu esters (CAS 84988-79-4), is a UVCB substance comprising linear saturated and unsatured fatty acids with a chain length of C16 - C18. The fatty acid chains are esterified with isopropanol. The target and source substances are characterised by similar physico-chemical properties. All substances are readily biodegradable, poorly soluble in water (WS <0.2 mg/L) and are not volatile (VP <0.1 Pa). The log Kow of target and source substance are high (>6) and increases with fatty acid chain length. The key study with Fatty acids, C16-18 and C18-unsatd., iso-Bu esters (CAS 84988-79-4) was performed according to OSPARCOM guideline 1995 and GLP (White, 1999). The test organism Corophium volutator was exposed to the test substance in a static saltwater system with natural marine sediment for 10 days. Nominal concentrations between 17.58 and 16179.14 mg/kg dw were tested. The 10d-LC50 is determined to be 2978.47 mg/kg dw. The experimental results indicate a very low short-term toxicity to sediment organism for the substance tested. Based on the structural and profile similarities of target and source substance, the assessment of toxicity to sediment organisms can also be considered valid for Fatty acids, C8-10, octyl esters (CAS 91031-98-0). Thus, long-term testing of sediment organisms is not considered necessary.
