Description of key information

According to the Integrated Testing Strategy for toxicity to sediment dwelling organisms (Guidance on Information Requirements and Chemical Safety Assessment, chapter 7b, figure 7.8.8) no sediment testing is necessary for a substance with a log Kow <3. Further testing on the toxicity of acetonitrile to sediment organisms is therefore not justified, and the partitioning method can be adequately used to predict the PNEC for the sediment compartment. Bowman et al (1981) reported an 18-hour EC50 value of 6530 mg/L for acetonitrile in Hyalella azteca (Scud), however due to limited information being available on the study, this data is not considered reliable and is therefore disregarded.
