Description of key information

Acute tests on all three trophic levels were performed to examine the aquatic toxicity of sebacic acid, both in freshwater as well as in marine water.

Aquatic invertebrates turned out to be the most sensitive species revealing an LC50 (48h) of 18 mg/L and a NOEC (48h) of 10 mg/L. Studies were performed on Acartia tonsa and Daphnia magna. Thus, sebacic acid is considered to be acutely harmful to aquatic organisms.

Effects of sebacic acid towards algae (Skeletonema costatum) were found in the same range providing a 72 hours EL50 of 38.7 mg/L.

Fish turned out to be less sensitiv to sebacic acid, since no mortality observed in two limit tests with marine (Scophthalmus maximus) and freshwater fish (Danio rerio) species.

No data on long-term toxicity on fish and Daphnia are available.

The hazard assessment of sebacic acid reveals neither a need to classify the substance as dangerous for the environment, nor is it a PBT or vPvB substance. Therefore, and for reasons of animal welfare, a long-term toxicity study in fish and Daphnia is not provided.
