Toxicity studies are available with soil macroorganisms (Eiseinia foetida), terrestrial plants (Glycine max, Lycopersicon esulentum, Sinapis alba, Avena sativa, Lolium perenne), soil microorganisms and birds.

A short-term and a long-term soil organism toxicity study is available for earthworms (E. foetida), which indicate that the test substance is of low toxicity: NOEC (14-d and 28-d) ≥1000 mg/kg dw, based on mortality and reproduction (Priestly, 2010b and Schmidt, 2011, respectively).

GTL Diesel was tested with a series of plants in growth studies which also indicated the low toxicity of the test substance. The lowest EC50 (21-d) was 990 mg/kg dw with L. perenne based on growth, while the lowest NOEC (21-d) was 560 mg/kg dw recorded with S. alba also based on growth (Goodband, 2011).

A nitrogen transformation test with the substance resulted in an EC50 (28-d) value of 320 mg/kg and a NOEC (28-d) of 180 mg/kg based on nitrate formation rate (Clarke, 2010).

The median lethal concentration (LC50) for the dietary oral toxicity of GTL Diesel in young Japanese quails was determined as > 5000 mg test item/kg diet (based on test item intake: LC50> 1163.9 mg per kg body weight per day). No test item related mortalities / symptoms were observed within the observation period and at necropsy, no macroscopic findings were observed for the treated animals.

Overall, the studies indicate that GTL Gasoil exhibits low toxicity to terrestrial organisms.
