Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Melting point (strontium chloride): ca. 874°C
Melting point (strontium chloride hexahydrate): 61°C (when rapidly heated)

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

For the evaluation of this endpoint data from three handbooks (Merck (2006) and CRC handbook (1974 and 2008)) was used as key information. All three references gave very slightly different values for the melting point of strontium chloride (868°C, 875°C and 874°C). For this reason, it was decided that the melting point is about 874°C, looking at the youngest information source.

In addition, the melting point for strontium chloride hexahydrate (61°C, when rapidly heated) stated in the Merck Index was used as supporting information for this endpoint.

According to the REACH regulation ("ECHA, guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment - chapter R.7.a"), it is allowed to use specific handbook data as a reliable data source. Useful reference books and data compliations containing peer reviewed physico-chemical data include the CRC handbook of Chemistry and Physics and the Merck Index.
