- Conclusions:
- The Epoxidised linseed oil (ELO), CAS: 8016-11-3 molecule has a substantially negative oxygen balance, which is below the value of concern, and none of the structural features associated with explosive properties. It is concluded that Epoxidised linseed oil (ELO), CAS: 8016-11-3 is unlikely to undergo rapid decomposition with the evolution of gases or release of heat and does not present a risk of explosion.
- Executive summary:
An expert review of the composition and properties of this product was conducted, which is an acceptable approach to address the requirements of Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.
The Epoxidised linseed oil (ELO), CAS: 8016-11-3 molecule has a substantially negative oxygen balance, which is below the value of concern, and none of the structural features associated with explosive properties. It is concluded that Epoxidised linseed oil (ELO), CAS: 8016-11-3 is unlikely to undergo rapid decomposition with the evolution of gases or release of heat and does not present a risk of explosion.
Reference
CcHhOo + [c + (h/4) – (o/2)] O2 c CO2 + (h/2) H2O
Using the formula:
Oxygen balance = -1600 x [(2.c) +(h/2)-O]/molecular weight
If there is a deficiency of oxygen present, the balance is negative, while an excess of oxygen gives a positive balance, and such compounds can act as oxidants and may be explosive in nature. The balance is expressed as a percentage. Nitrogen is not considered oxidizable and is usually liberated as the gaseous element during explosive decomposition. Materials or systems approaching stoichiometric composition (zero oxygen balance) are the most powerfully explosive, giving maximum heat energy release. There are known explosives with an oxygen balance of -64%. Compounds with an oxygen balance more negative than -200% are not considered to pose an explosive risk. The oxygen balance of Epoxidised linseed oil (ELO), CAS: 8016-11-3 is calculated as follows:
The molecular formula is C57H92O7
MW= 889.36
Oxygen balance = -1600 x [(2 x 57) + (92/2) – 7] / 889.36
Oxygen balance = -275.25%
The oxygen balance of Epoxidised linseed oil (ELO), CAS: 8016-11-3 is substantially more negative than -200%.
