Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

The viscosity of Benzyltoluene was determined according to OECD guideline 114.
Using a rolling ball viscosimeter, a viscosity of
3.618 ± 0.018 mPa * s
at 20 °C was measured, this value is the mean of two independent triplicate determinations with their standard deviation. Good correlation of the two determinations was given (relative standard deviation was 0.50 %). All measurements were performed at 20.00 ± 0.04 °C.

Additionally a viscosity of
2.301 ± 0.003 mPa * s at 40.00 ± 0.02 °C
was measured.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Viscosity:
3.618 mPa · s (dynamic)
at the temperature of:
20 °C

Additional information

The conversion between dynamic and kinematic viscosity is described as follows:

dynamic viscosity (mPa*s) = kinematic viscosity (mm2/s) x density (g/cm3)

For Benzyltoluene  the kinematic viscosity at 40 °C is 2.303 mm2/s.

A substance is classified in Category 1:

(a) based on reliable and good quality human evidence

or

(b) if it is a hydrocarbon and has a kinematic viscosity of 20.5 mm2/s or less, measured at 40 °C .

According to these criteria Benzyltoluene has to be classified into Category 1 for aspiration hazard. No further testing is required.
