Description of key information

In a study conducted according to OECD Guideline 201 and using Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata as test organism, the ErC50 value was 20.1 mg/L and the NOEC values was 6.25 mg/L,in terms of growth rate inhibition, after 72 h of exposure.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

EC50 for freshwater algae:
20.1 mg/L
EC10 or NOEC for freshwater algae:
6.25 mg/L

Additional information

One GLP Guideline study conducted according to OECD 201 is available investigating the toxicity of the test item PC-2013-491 on the growth of the uni-cellular fresh water green alga Pseudokirchneriella subcapitata exposed for a test period of 72 hoursunder static conditions according to OECD 201 (Evonik Industries, 2013).

P. subcapitata were exposed to control and test chemical at nominal concentration of 6.25, 12.5, 25.0, 50.0 and 100 mg/L.The measured concentrations at test start were 7.07, 15.13, 29.41, 56.49, 117 mg/L (i.e.113 – 121 % of nominal)

The effect evaluation was based on nominal concentrations as the initially measured concentrations were within the range of 80 - 120% of the nominal concentrations. Clear treatment related effects were observed on the growth of P. subcapitata. The NOEC of 6.25 mg/L and ErC50 of 20.1 mg/L were determined for growth rate inhibition. The NOEC for yield was considered to be < 6.25 mg/L and an EyC50 of 11.2 mg/L was determined.

This study is classified as acceptable and satisfies the guideline requirements to determine the toxicity of the test item on the growth of the uni-cellular fresh water green alga under static conditions.
