For the substance tetramethylthiuram disulfide (CAS No. 137-26-8) long-term studies are available for two trophic levels (secondary consumers and decomposer) and short-term studies are available for all trophic levels.
Upon the trophic levels tested, earthworms showed the highest sensitivity to tetramethylthiuram disulfide (CAS No. 137-26-8) in a long-term toxicity test according to OECD 222 (GLP) after exposure to Thiram 80 WG spiked soil. Concentration dependent effects on the reproduction of Eisenia fetida were observed after 56 d of exposure, resulting in an EC10 (56 d) value of 7.33 mg a.i./kg soil dw (nominal).
Furthermore, following long-term effects of tetramethylthiuram disulfide (CAS No. 137-26-8) were observed in the available terrestrial key studies:
Exposure of Folsomia candida (OECD 232) to Thiram 80 WG spiked soil caused no effects on survival or reproduction, resulting in NOEC (28 d) values of≥52.75 mg a.i./kg soil dw (nominal), respectively. Tetramethylthiuram disulfide (CAS No. 137-26-8), applied to agricultural soil, was found to have no influence on the short-term respiration (OECD 217) and no long-term influence on the nitrogen turnover (OECD 216) of the tested soil microorganisms, resulting in 28 d NOEC values of ≥31.71 mg a.i./kg soil dw (both nominal), respectively. A reproduction test with the bird species Colinus virginianus (OECD 206) revealed slight effects on reproduction and body weight resulting into a NOEC (23 wk) of 500 mg/kg diet. No mortalities were recorded in this test.
Additionally, in the key short-term toxicity study, six plant species were exposed for 21 d to tetramethylthiuram disulfide (CAS No. 137-26-8) via spray applied soil (OECD 208 and GLP). EC50 (21 d) values of > 4.23 mg/kg soil dw (nominal) were determined for Beta vulgaris, Solanum lycopersicum, Zea mays and Glycine max. Only slight effects to the species Glycine max and Zea mays were determined for the endpoints seedling emergence (12.8% reduction) and plant height (2.4% reduction), respectively.
All key studies were conducted according to appropriate guidelines and GLP.
