Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Endpoint:
flammable solids
Type of information:
experimental study
Adequacy of study:
key study
Study period:
2001
Reliability:
2 (reliable with restrictions)
Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
other: Acceptable, well-documented study report which meets basic scientific principles
Principles of method if other than guideline:
Determination of the combustion class number ("Brennzahl")
Test procedure:
burning rate test over 100 mm length
Burning time:
ca. 178 s

When an ignition source was contacted with the sample, spread of an open fire was observed (BZ 5).

The burning time for 100 mm was 178 s (burning rate 0.56 mm/s).

Interpretation of results:
non flammable
Remarks:
Migrated information
Conclusions:
The combustion number of the test item is BZ 5 and the burning rate is 0.56 mm/s. The test item is therefore not a flammable solid class 4.1 according to the transport regulations.

Description of key information

The flammability of the test item was tested by determination of the combustion class number and burning time. The combustion class number of the test item is BZ 5 and the burning time for 100 mm was 178 s (burning rate 0.56 mm/s).

Self-heating of the test item was observed starting from 220 °C (max. temp. ca. 340 °C). The hot storage test at a temperature of 190 °C caused warming of the sample by 9 K within 108 min after temperature equalisation (which took 3.7 h). Afterwards the sample temperature fell back to the oven temperature.

The test item is not flammable in contact with water, and has no pyrophoric properties.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

The test item is therefore not a flammable solid, not flammable in contact with water, and has no pyrophoric properties.

Self-heating of the test item starts at 220 °C. Sufficient stability in hot storage test (1 L wire mesh basket) at 190 °C. No classification according to transport regulations required.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The available data on flammability of the test substance do not meet the criteria for classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008, and are therefore conclusive but not sufficient for classification: The substance is not flammable and not self-heating. Based on experience in handling and use pyrophoricity and flammability on contact with water are not expected.
