- Endpoint:
- flammable solids
- Type of information:
- experimental study
- Adequacy of study:
- key study
- Study period:
- 2008-07-14
- Reliability:
- 1 (reliable without restriction)
- Rationale for reliability incl. deficiencies:
- guideline study
- Qualifier:
- according to guideline
- Guideline:
- EU Method A.10 (Flammability (Solids))
- Deviations:
- no
- GLP compliance:
- yes (incl. QA statement)
- Remarks:

- Key result
- Test procedure:
- burning rate test: preliminary screening test
- Remarks on result:
- substance does not ignite and propagate combustion either by burning with flame or smouldering along 200 mm of the powder train within the 2 minutes test period
- Remarks:
- the test item melted at contact with flame
- Interpretation of results:
- not classified based on GHS criteria
- Remarks:
- Migrated information
- Conclusions:
- The test item is not a highly flammable solid in the sense of the European Commission Regulation (EC) No. 440/2008, Method A.10. and is not a flammable solid in the sense of the classification criteria as laid down in Regulation (EC) No. 1272/2008 (CLP Regulation).
- Endpoint:
- substances / mixtures which in contact with water emit flammable gases
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the experience in production or handling shows that the substance does not react with water, e.g. the substance is manufactured with water or washed with water
- Endpoint:
- pyrophoric solids
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- the study does not need to be conducted because the substance is known to be stable in contact with air at room temperature for prolonged periods of time (days) and hence, the classification procedure does not need to be applied
- Endpoint:
- self-heating substances / mixtures
- Data waiving:
- study scientifically not necessary / other information available
- Justification for data waiving:
- other:
- Justification for type of information:
- JUSTIFICATION FOR DATA WAIVING
The classification procedure for self-heating substances or mixtures need not be applied if the results of a screening test can be adequately correlated with the classification test and an appropriate safety margin is applied. An example of screening tests is the Grewer Oven test (VDI guideline 2263, part 1, 1990, Test methods for the Determination of the Safety Characteristics of Dusts).
The Grewer Oven test performed with the substance results in no exothermic effects up to 430 °C (report no. 2008-0150-DGS). Therefore, the substance is not self-heating on the basis of the screening test and the classification test N.4 in Part III, subsection 33.3.1.6 of the UN-MTC, need not be performed. - Reason / purpose for cross-reference:
- data waiving: supporting information
Referenceopen allclose all
The substance could not be ignited by flame during the preliminary test.
A main test was therefore not necessary.
Description of key information
non flammable
not pyrophoric
no flammability on contact with water
not self-heating
Key value for chemical safety assessment
- Flammability:
- not classified
Additional information
No ignition in the preliminary burning rate test (EU Method A.10).
Based on experience in handling and use pyrophoricity and flammability on contact with water are not to be expected.
The substance showed no self-heating behaviour (no exothermic effects up to 430 °C) in a Grewer Oven test.
Justification for classification or non-classification
The available data on flammability of the test substance do not meet the criteria for classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008, and are therefore conclusive but not sufficient for classification:
No ignition in the preliminary burning rate test (EU Method A.10).
Based on experience in handling and use pyrophoricity and flammability on contact with water are not to be expected.
The substance showed no self-heating behaviour (no exothermic effects up to 430 °C) in a Grewer Oven test.
