Remarks on result:
no reaction with water observed
Test procedure:
step 4
Remarks on result:
other: minor gas evolution observed in 2 of 3 trials after water addition

Stage 1:

The test substance was added to a dish containing distilled water. No liberation of gas could be observed. Attempts to ignite the gas phase above the dish with the flame of a burner produced negative results.

Stage 2:

The test substance was introduced to a filter paper floating on the surface of the distilled water contained in a dish. No liberation of gas could be observed. Attempts to ignite the gas phase above the filter paper produced negative results.

Stage 3:

A few drops of water were added to a sample of the test substance. No liberation of reaction gasses could be observed. Attempts to ignite the gaseous phase produced negative results.

Stage 4:

Water (approx. 20 mL) was added from a dropping funnel to 10 g samples of test substance. Three trials were performed. Test sample weight: 10 g (trials 1 -3).

Results (total quantities of liberated gas in L/kg h, total time 420 min):

Trial 1: 0.1 at t = 60 min; 0 afterwards

Trial 2: 0 over the whole period

Trial 3: 0.1 at t = 60 min; 0 afterwards

The gas production based on one kilogram of test substance and a one hour test period was considerably less than 1 L/kg h in all trials.

The test item does not liberate gases in hazardous amounts in case of contact with water or humid air when tested according to this procedure.

Description of key information

non-flammable on ignition

non-pyrophoric

does not liberate gases in hazardous amounts on contact with water

not self-heating

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Flammability:
not classified

Additional information

The substance is non-flammable on ignition on the basis of the outcome of the EU A.10 test. It is non-pyrophoric based on the outcome of the EU A.13 test. The substance does not liberate hazardous amounts of gases on contact with water (EU A.12 test). The result of the self-heating Bowes-Cameron-Cage test (according to UN N.4) is negative.

Justification for classification or non-classification

The available data on flammability of the test substance do not meet the criteria for classification according to Regulation (EC) 1272/2008 and are therefore conclusive but not sufficient for classification: it was experimentally proven that the substance was non-flammable on ignition (EU Method A.10), did not liberate hazardous amounts of gases on contact with water (EU Method A.12) and it was non-pyrophoric (EU Method A.13). The substance is not self-heating according to the outcome of the test according to UN N.4.
