Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

Aquatic toxicity studies of 2-ethylhexanoic acid, copper salt are not available. Thus, read-across to the assessment entities soluble copper substances and

2-ethylhexanoic acid is applied since the ions of 2-ethylhexanoic acid, copper salt determine its fate and toxicity in the environment. Reliable studies indicate that the moiety of ecotoxicological concern are copper cations. Regarding copper toxicity in aquatic environments, a large set of data is available including multiple studies on Ceriodaphnia dubia and Daphnia magna as summarized in the attached report “Derivation of acute Ecotoxicity Reference Values (ERVs) for copper” with species-specific geometric mean E(L)C50 values ranging from 12.6 to 40.0 microg Cu/L and 16.3 to 66.2 microg Cu/L, respectively. For 2-ethylhexanoate, the lowest EC50 identified amounts to 85.4 mg/L (48-h) based on available data from three studies using a weight of evidence approach. Thus, 2-ethylhexanoic acid, copper salt appears to have potential for acute toxicity to aquatic invertebrates.
