It was carried out a hydrolysis test by ph 4.0, ph 7.0 and ph 9.0 according to EEC Guidline C.7Degradation - Abiotic Degradation, Hydrolysis as a Function of pH” (in analogy to OECD testing method 111) (see section 5.1.2).

Half-life time in pH 4 buffer solution

Half-life time in pH 7 buffer solution

Half-life time in pH 9 buffer solution

< 1 min.

For any of the buffered samples after the first spectrum no significant changes in the following1H NMR spectra could be observed. Already the first spectrum showed only signals of EtOH and no EtOSi signals. Therefore it was concluded that hydrolysis was already completed when the first NMR spectrum of each pH series was measured.

For technical reasons it was decided to conduct the hydrolysis tests at room temperature (25 °C). This has no adverse effect on the test results because of kinetic reasons at higher temperatures (e.g. at 50°C as originally demanded by the testing method) the half-life time for this hydrolysis reaction will also be in the range below 1 minute. Moreover, hydrolysis will even be faster at 50 °C than at 25°C but the exact difference can’t be determined due to the time limitation of the analytical method.
