Description of key information

Insoluble in water.

Key value for chemical safety assessment

Additional information

As reported in SIDS Dossier of MnO2 approved at SIAM 25, (17 -18 October 2007) with reference to Merck Index,1998, 12th ed. and to Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, Lide DR (Editor 2004) the substance is insoluble in water. Manganese solubility increases at low pH and under reducing conditions and is most commonly in the 2+ and 4+ oxidation states in aquatic systems. The presence of high concentrations of chlorides, nitrates and sulphates may increase manganese solubility, increasing both aqueous mobility and uptake by plants. Manganese precipitates out in sediment mainly as Mn4+ and re-solubilizes in the water column mainly as Mn2+.
