Toxicity to aquatic algae and cyanobacteria

Description of key information

There are three studies available on the toxicity of bis(hydroxylammonium) sulphate to algae.

The inhibition of algal growth using the green algae Scenedesmus subspicatus was examined according to the german national standard guideline DIN 38412 Part 9. The test was conducted using OECD medium and eight (nominal) concentrations between 0.04 and 5.0 mg/l without analytics. PH was measured as 8.4 – 8.7 at the beginning of exposure and 8.6 - 10.0 at the end of the study. After 72 hours of static exposure an EC50 of 0.72 mg/l was calculated. EC20 and EC90 were determined to be 0.42 and 1.24 mg/l. The critical concentrations, based on yeld, have benn re-evaluated using the software TodxRatPro (Version 2.09, 2005). The recalculated values, based on growth rate, are EC50 (72 h): 1.043 mg/L and EC10 (72 h): 0.529 mg/L (BASF SE, 2007).

The result of the algae test is confirmed by a publication of the National Association of Photographic Manufactures (1974) where among other substances the effects of bis(hydroxylammonium)sulphate on the green algae Selenastrum capricornutum were tested in a provisional static system for 7 days. While no effects on growth were observed up to 0.1 mg/l, growth of the population was inhibited significantly at 1.0 mg/l. However, since no detailed information about the test is available and no concentrations were measured the test is considered as supportive information.

In addition bis(hydroxylammonium)sulphate was investigated in an old screening study of 1952 (Fitzgerald et al.),in which 300 chemicals were screened for herbicidal activity. The blue-green algae Micocystis aeruginosa was used as test organism. The intention of the study was to screen for a herbicidal substance inhibiting the growth of blue-green algae without effects on other aquatic species. Effects were determined by visual estimation. The ErC100 estimated for bis(hydroxylammonium)sulphate in this 24 hour test was 2.0 mg/l. However, due to insufficient documentation, the study is not suitable for risk assessment and the result mentioned as indicative, additional information.
