Please be aware that this old REACH registration data factsheet is no longer maintained; it remains frozen as of 19th May 2023.

The new ECHA CHEM database has been released by ECHA, and it now contains all REACH registration data. There are more details on the transition of ECHA's published data to ECHA CHEM here.

Description of key information

No adverse effects up to the limit of water solubility (0.4 mg/L measured in aqua dest; 0.66 mg/L in fish test medium) for Oncorhynchus mykiss (OECD 203).

No adverse effects up to the limit of water solubility (0.4 mg/L measured in aqua dest; 0.125 mg/L in M4 test medium) for Daphnia magna (OECD 202).

No adverse effects up to the limit of water solubility (0.4 mg/L measured in aqua dest; 0.035 mg/L in algae test medium) for Selenastrum capricornutum (OECD 201).

Activated sludge was not inhibited based on a short term respiration test at 100 mg/L (nominal). Therefore disturbances in the biodegradation process of a sewage treatment plant is not anticipated for 2-ethylhexyl benzoate.

In a test according to OECD 211  Daphnia magna were exposed (10 replicates of a single daphnid per group) to a solution of the substance at a nominal concentration of 100% v/v saturated solution (actual 24-h TWA 0.014 mg/L) for a period of 21 days. The test solutions were renewed daily throughout the test. No effects on moratlity/immobility, daphnia length and reproduction were seen at a 100% saturated concentration. Therefore it can be concluded that the NOEC is 0.014 mg/L.

Additional information

Acute toxicity of 2 -ethylhexyl benzoate (CAS No. 5444 -75 -7) to aquatic organisms was investigated on three trophic levels (algae, invertebrates and fish). In all available short-term toxicity tests, no adverse effects occurred in the range of the water solubility of the substance (0.4 mg/L measured in aqua dest, 0.035 - 0.66 mg/L in the aquatic toxicity test media).

In a test according to OECD 211 no effects on mortality/immobility, daphnia length and reproduction were seen at a 100% saturated concentration (measured TWA 0.014 mg/L). Therefore it can be concluded that the NOEC is 0.014 mg/L.
