The biodegradability of alcohol ethoxylate (C9-11, < 2.5 EO, CAS 68439-46-3) is assessed on the basis of data from two GLP studies with similar alcohol ethoxylates (C9-11-branched, 2.5 EO and 3 EO, CAS 169107-21-5) (Clarke, 2005 and Daniel, 2006). Both studies are conducted according to ISO 14593 (CO2 headspace test). Activated sludge from domestic sewage treatment plant was used as inoculum. Based on CO2 evolution, degradation rates of 72% and 101% were determined.
Hence, alcohol ethoxylate (C9-11, < 2.5 EO) can be classified as readily biodegradable under the strict OECD requirements.
