Description of key information

The substance was not toxic to microorganisms when tested according to method 8 of DIN 38412 (German standard method for the examination of water, waste water, and sludge), the substance was determined to possess a toxicity threshold of 500 mg/L. According to the ECHA Guidance on information requirements and chemical safety assessment, Chapter R.7b: Endpoint specific guidance section R.7.8.17.1 Laboratory data on toxicity on sewage treatment plant microorganisms, results of the cell multiplication inhibition test with P. putida (Bringmann and Kühn 1980) can be used for calculation of the PNECstp.

Additional information

Five studies addressing toxicity to microorganisms are presented in the dossier.

Toxicity to microorganisms.001 – pseudomonas - 1980 – key: Acute toxicity to the microorganism Pseudomonas putida according to the German standards guideline DIN 38412, part 8 (Pseudomonas Zellvermehrungshemm – Test) not according to GLP (pre-dates GLP requirements). The study was conducted under static conditions for 16 hours with concentrations ranging from 2 to 2x1014% v/v and was maintained at a temperature of 25°C. Following inoculation, the extinction value of the monochromatic radiation at 436 mm for a 10 mm layer of bacterial suspension was determined. Based on this determination the toxicity threshold for pseudomonas was reported to be 500 mg/L.

Toxicity to microorganisms.002 – Pseudomonas -1977: Acute toxicity to the microorganism Pseudomonas putida was conducted not according to specific guidelines and not according to GLP (pre-dates GLP requirements). The organisms were exposed to the substance under static conditions for 16 hours. The toxicity threshold for growth inhibition was determined to be 500 mg/L.

Toxicity to microorganisms.003 – Protozoa - 1978: Acute toxicity to the microorganism Entosiphon sulcatum was conducted not according to specific guidelines and not according to GLP (pre-dates GLP requirements). The organisms were exposed to the substance under static conditions for 72 hours. The toxicity threshold for growth inhibition was determined to be 1282 mg/L.

Toxicity to microorganisms.004 – Protozoa - 1980: Acute toxicity to the microorganism Uronema parduzci was conducted not according to specific guidelines and not according to GLP (pre-dates GLP requirements). The organisms were exposed to the substance under static conditions for 20 hours. The toxicity threshold for growth inhibition was determined to be 1416 mg/L.

Toxicity to microorganisms.005 – Protozoa - 1980: Acute toxicity to the microorganism Chilomonas paramaecium was conducted not according to specific guidelines and not according to GLP (pre-dates GLP requirements). The organisms were exposed to the substance under static conditions for 48 hours. The toxicity threshold for growth inhibition was determined to be 745 mg/L.
